Boys’ Hair Care

by Cozy on February 19, 2013

Boys Hair Care, Caring for Boys Hair,

For parents, finding information on how to properly care for your boy’s hair can be a challenge. Much of the information about kids’ hair care focuses on girls’ hair care and hairstyles. (I’m guilty of this too, I wrote a whole book on girls’ hair!) But the fact of the matter is, boys are actually in the salon more often than girls.

This isn’t because boys’ hair is biologically any different from girls’ hair, it’s just that boys and girls wear their hair differently. Girls tend to have longer hair, so more effort goes into daily styling and upkeep. Boys generally have shorter hair, and subsequently require frequent haircuts.

So not surprisingly, I get a lot of questions about caring for boys’ hair. Parents come to me in search of advice on which shampoo to use, how often to shampoo, how to shampoo, if conditioner is necessary, etc. Well look no further, parents! Cozy’s boys’ hair care cheat sheet is here!

Which Shampoo to Use?

  • Tear-free shampoos are best for little ones because they are very mild, hypoallergenic, and soap-free.
  • Clarifying shampoos work to get the built-up gunk—chlorine, mineral deposits, dirt, etc.—out of his hair. Use once a week for oily hair, and once a month or as needed for normal to dry hair.
  • Hydrating shampoos are best for curly, dry, and extra thick hair. Use three times a week to help his hair retain moisture

Shampoo Every Day?

How often you shampoo depends on your son’s hair. For thick and dry hair, washings can be spaced, but thin and oily hair should be washed more frequently. Getting the right shampooing routine requires a little trial and error. Try washing every other day—if his scalp gets too dry, add another day between washings.

Is There a Right Way to Wash Hair?

  1. Pour a quarter sized dollop of shampoo into your hand and focus on lathering at the roots—the scalp is where the oil comes from
  2. Gently massage the scalp with your fingertips to loosen any (inevitable) dirt
  3. Wash the ends last, simply working the suds through the ends of the hair
  4. Be sure to wash out all shampoo—leaving product in the hair can cause and dry itchy scalp
  5. Contrary to the popular adage, you do NOT need to lather, rinse and repeat on your son’s hair

Conditioner?

In my experience, a lot of parents use a 2-in-1 conditioning shampoo on boys. Not as much upkeep goes into styling boys’ hair, so it is easy to assume that washing habits should be just as quick. However, 2-in-1 conditioning shampoo doesn’t cut it for everyone. Boys with thick or dry hair should ALWAYS use a separate conditioner.

I know that even adding a minute onto bath-time can be difficult but trust me, his healthy hydrated hair will thank you! Condition his hair in the bath after shampooing. If staying in the bath is a challenge, a spray-on leave-in conditioner will do the trick.

Stopping Static

When the air is dry and winter hats are required, boys’ hair tends to take an unsightly turn for the worst. Luckily, there are a few ways to combat static cling and other winter hair woes:

  • Rubbing a fabric softener sheet—yup, the same kind you use for laundry —lightly over your son’s head will help to manage stubborn static
  • A dime-sized amount of light styling cream works just as well to smooth flyway’s and static
  • If his hair is curly, misting with water and scrunching will restore bounce to curls and waves
  • For fixing hat hair, flat hair can be fluffed at the roots with your fingertips
  • Shampoo hair less frequently in the winter to prevent over-drying

How to Prevent Lice – 3 Golden Rules

by Cozy on February 5, 2013

Every September parents start asking me if there’s anyway to “lice-proof” their children. I can’t tell you how to “lice proof” children but I can definitely give you some advice on ways to prevent head lice, especially during the school year. The following are some easy rules designed to minimize the risk of a lice infestation (and the panic that often ensues).

Preventing Head Lice: Three Golden Rules for Kids

The best way to prevent head lice in kids is to arm them (and yourself) with knowledge. Start by teaching your children these basic three rules so that they are more aware of their surroundings, especially in the classroom:

1. NO SHARING: We all try to teach our children to share, but we have to draw the line when it comes to preventing lice. Children should not share:

  • Combs
  • Hair Brushes
  • Hair Accessories
  • Hats
  • Helmets
  • Scarves
  • Jackets
  • Clothing

2. NO HEAD-TO-HEAD CONTACT: Children should to try to avoid head-to-head contact during play and other activities at home, school, and elsewhere such during sports, on the playground, at play dates and at sleepovers, etc.

3. CHILDREN SHOULD NOT lie on beds, couches, pillows, carpets, or play with stuffed animals that have recently been in contact with a lice-infested child.

Preventing Lice: What You Can Do at Home

  • DO NOT wash your child’s hair everyday. Contrary to popular belief, lice are most attracted to clean hair. When you don’t wash everyday, the build up of natural oils fortifies the hair shaft, making it more difficult for lice to attach.
  • USE LICE PRODUCTS CONTAINING TEE TREE OIL: In order to prevent an outbreak (not to “treat” one) Tea Tree Oil is highly effective. Tea Tree Oil is a natural antiseptic and the scent repels head lice the way that citronella repels mosquitoes.

Good News! Head lice prevention products don’t have to be strong and smelly. Two of the most popular products in my So Cozy Hair Care line are BOO! Shampoo and BOO! Leave-in Conditioner. They protect children from lice with gentle natural ingredients (such as Tea Tree Oil), they smell delicious, and they leave children’s hair soft and shiny.

How To Make Your Child’s Hair Grow Faster

by Cozy on January 3, 2013

Believe it or not, this is a question that I get asked all the time! There’s no magical trick to making hair grow, because mostly it’s a matter of genetics. There are, however, some things you can do to help the natural process along and you may actually see your child’s hair grow faster.

Here are some of the most common questions about growth I’ve received over the years, and my expert advice on helping hair grow and be healthy. You can call it magic, but I just call it years of experience!

Q: My eight-year-old daughter’s very fine hair grows very slowly. Is it true that cutting her hair will help it grow thicker and faster?
A: There is no scientific evidence that suggests that cutting makes hair grow faster, but I can tell you from experience that is does seem like it helps. My theory is that by trimming or cleaning up the scraggly ends and providing a shape and style to the hair, you cause it to appear thicker and consequently notice the growth more.

Q: My three-month old has lost nearly all of the hair he was born with. How can I help the new hair to grow faster?
A: Infants often lose all the hair they are born within the first six months. In many cases, the hair that grows back will be an entirely new color or texture than before. For some children, this hair grows back quickly, for others it takes several months. This is all normal, and there’s no need to worry if your once brunette baby is now blonde!

Q: My nine-year-old desperately wants to have long flowing “princess” hair. Her hair is shoulder length now—do you have any tricks to speed up hair growth?
A: The most important thing in this situation is patience! New hair grows ½ to 1 inch each month and averages about 5 to 6 inches every year. That being said, it could be several months until you start to see noticeable growth.

Eating for healthy hair

Adding certain foods to can actually promote hair growth—and give children the nourishment their bodies need.
• Peanuts, corn, and spinach contain Vitamin E, which stimulates hair growth.
• Folic acid, found in foods like asparagus, peas, citrus fruits, and turkey, will help promote hair growth by strengthening strands so they don’t break off prematurely.
• Drinking water—four to six glasses a day—will keep hair hydrated.
• Vitamin B produces keratin, a protein that strengthens strands. Found in bananas, whole-grain cereals, rice and eggs.
• Dairy products like skim milk and yogurt—as well as broccoli and strawberries–are great sources of calcium, an important mineral for hair growth.

Regular trips to the salon for routine trims are another trick that keeps hair healthy.
